A drinks corner that keeps water easy to find
An easy-to-reach water spot can take pressure off both the dining table and the host.

People should not have to ask permission to refill a glass of water. At a casual gathering, a visible pitcher and a small group of glasses can make the room easier to use. The arrangement need not resemble a bar or occupy a whole kitchen counter. A stable, clear corner is often enough.
Choose its location by movement rather than appearance. If the prettiest side table stands beside a doorway, people stopping there may block everyone else. A counter near the seating area, with room to put down a glass, can be more useful. Keep the station away from electrical equipment and surfaces that cannot tolerate spills.
Set out a modest number of glasses and replenish them when needed. A crowded tray full of tall glassware can be awkward to reach across. Put the pitcher at the accessible edge without leaving its handle hanging into a walkway. Leave a dry landing area beside it so a guest can set down one drink before picking up another.
Keep the choices legible
If you offer plain and flavored water, make it easy to tell which is which. Simple labels are sufficient. Decorations inside a pitcher should never obscure whether it needs refilling, and a narrow-necked decorative vessel may be difficult to clean thoroughly. Choose serving pieces for their intended food use, not just for their silhouette.
A small washable cloth or suitable mat can catch drips, but it should lie flat. Check beneath it during cleanup rather than leaving moisture trapped against a wood surface. Put spare napkins nearby without stacking them where a dripping pitcher will soak them.
There is no need to surround the water with a complete collection of cocktail tools, bowls and flowers. Those objects reduce the room available for the task. If the gathering also includes other drinks, keep their equipment grouped separately so plain water stays obvious.
Before guests arrive, fill a glass yourself from the position they will use. Notice whether the pitcher is too heavy, the glasses are hard to separate or the handle points the wrong way. Those small corrections are more useful than another decorative accessory. A water corner should feel easy enough that nobody needs instructions.
