Where a Mirror Actually Helps
Before choosing the frame, check what the mirror will show from the places where people actually sit and walk.

A mirror is often suggested for a room that feels dim or small, but its usefulness depends on placement. It reflects whatever is opposite, including a cluttered shelf, an awkward doorway, or the back of a television. The frame may be beautiful while the view inside it is doing the room no favors.
Begin with the purpose. A mirror near the door may be for checking a coat or hair before leaving. A decorative mirror above a cabinet may mainly provide shape and reflected light. These uses require different positions, so decide which matters before selecting a size.
Hold a smaller mirror at the proposed location, or inspect the sightline as closely as possible, to understand the reflection. Look from the entrance and the main seats. What appears at one angle may disappear at another. A bright window can create a pleasant changing view, but glare or an uncomfortable reflection may matter during normal use.
A mirror is still a substantial object
The frame has visual weight even when its center reflects the room. An ornate dark frame can dominate a small wall; a simple one may recede. Compare its outline with the furniture below it and leave enough visual separation that the objects do not merge into a single crowded block.
Do not choose a leaning arrangement solely because it looks relaxed in photographs. The mirror must be secured and supported appropriately for its size, location, and the people using the room. Follow the product and fixing instructions rather than assuming a heavy piece will remain in place by itself.
Consider whether the room already has enough reflective surfaces. Glass cabinets, polished metal, and glossy furniture can make another mirror feel restless. In that case, a picture or a plain wall may provide a more useful pause. More reflection is not automatically more lightness.
For an everyday checking mirror, test the view at the heights of the people who will use it. Keep nearby items from blocking its useful area. A vase placed beautifully in front of the glass can defeat the reason it was installed. The best location is one where the mirror earns its place in the room while showing something you are happy to see twice.
