Editing a Sofa Full of Pillows

Keep the pillows that make the sofa more comfortable, then decide which of the remaining ones add anything.

If the first thing someone does before sitting down is move three pillows to the floor, the sofa has become a display shelf. An attractive arrangement should still leave room for the people who use it. Editing usually begins with comfort rather than color.

Take every decorative pillow off the sofa and sit where you normally sit. Notice whether you need support behind your back or under an arm. Bring back the pillow that solves that need. Its shape, firmness, and size matter more than whether it completes a symmetrical arrangement.

Next, add one decorative piece you particularly enjoy. This might be a print that connects to the rug or a textured cover that changes the feel of plain upholstery. Step back and look. You may already have enough. A long sofa can sometimes hold several pillows comfortably, but its length alone does not require a prescribed number.

Mix shape before adding pattern

Different shapes can make a small group interesting without increasing the number of prints. A rectangular pillow beside a square one gives the arrangement a clear outline. Make sure neither is so large that it occupies the usable seat. A generous pillow can look inviting in a photograph and feel cumbersome in a shallow chair.

Keep the covers' care requirements in mind. The pillow that will be leaned on daily needs a different level of tolerance from an occasional decorative accent. Read the specific care label instead of assuming a removable cover can be washed in any way. If delicate trim makes you reluctant to let anyone touch it, consider another location.

When several patterns compete, remove the weakest one before buying a coordinating solid. Often the room needs less material, not a new piece that promises to tie everything together. A plain sofa already supplies a large area of calm between the prints.

Give spare pillows a real destination. Store seasonal covers compactly if that suits their care needs, or move a useful pillow to another seat. A pile on the floor beside the sofa is evidence that the arrangement has not finished its job. The final test is simple: sit down with a book or talk with someone across the room. If the pillows help without demanding attention, the edit has worked.
